Medical Sonographer Glossary
Medical Sonographer Glossary
My name is Micalle, and I'm a student at Ahuntsic College. I'm in Orientation program since last semester, and this glossary will be for students who are interested in learning more about a Medical Sonographer. This will be specifically to understand, the terms of certain words used in high school in this program. It contains definitions in sentence case from Google search using ''define'' + the term, image from wikimedia commons, Google translations to French, parts of speech, pronunciation models and example sentences from the Lextutor Concordancer.
- ultrasound
- Noun
- Sound or other vibrations having an ultrasonic frequency, particularly as used in medical imaging. "an ultrasound scanner".
- Example: During her admission, Ms underwent an ULTRASOUND of her abdomen. Observation Following a medicine.
- fr: échographie

- radiation
- noun
- The emission of energy as electromagnetic waves or as moving subatomic particles, especially high-energy particles which cause ionization.
- Example: Mutations can be caused by certain forms of ionizing RADIATION, such as X-rays, and certain kinds of chemicals that damage the DNA and alter the message that it carries.
- fr: radiation
- fetus
- noun
- an offspring of a human or other mammal in the stages of prenatal development that follow the embryo stage (in humans taken as beginning eight weeks after conception)
- Example: All of these tests are able to determine whether or not the FETUS has the same genetic changes already found in the affected child.
- fr: fœtus

- transducer
- noun
- a device that converts variations in a physical quantity, such as pressure or brightness, into an electrical signal, or vice versa.
- Example: This would have been a more repeatable experiment if a non-contact TRANSDUCER were used, such as an EMAT or laser since the couplant was a large variable in the detection of the ultrasound waves.
- fr: transducteur

- doppler
- noun
- Relating to, or utilizing a shift in frequency in accordance with the Doppler effect. : of, relating to, using, or produced by Doppler ultrasound.
- Example: Ultrasound is used medically for such activities as prenatal scans and can measure blood flow using the DOPPLER shift of the ultrasound waves.
- fr: doppler

- couplant gel
- noun
- form of water-based substance, or a paste composed of oils or grease-like chemicals. It is placed in physical contact with a transducer that receives audio signals in the air and then coverts them to electrical impulses for transmission.
- Example: The amount of COUPLANT used and the pressure on the transducer had dramatic effects.
- fr: gel couplant
- x-ray
- noun
- a photographic or digital image of the internal composition of something, especially a part of the body, produced by X-rays being passed through it and being absorbed to different degrees by different materials.
- Example: Different modern technique, such as NMR, absorbance spectroscopy, X-RAY crystallography and mass spectrometry, are used to study the structure and function of some proteins in the monoclonal antibody.
- fr: radiographie

- womb
- noun
- the organ in the lower body of a woman or female mammal where offspring are conceived and in which they gestate before birth; the uterus.
- Example: DeCasper & Fifer (1980) showed that babies establish their preferences inside the WOMB, implying an innate tendency to choose.
- fr: utérus
- scanner
- noun
- a machine that examines the body through the use of radiation, ultrasound, or magnetic resonance imaging, as a diagnostic aids.
- Example: Comparison of ultrasound images is however less useful for areas of general "lumpiness" where there is no discrete abnormality to feel, as the quality of the image is restricted by the resolution of the SCANNER and the operator's experience.
- fr: scanner

- vital
- noun
- the body's important internal organs, especially the gut or the genitalia. "he felt the familiar knot contract in his vitals"
- Example: Her vital signs and findings from physical examination were normal, and she was not hospitalized.
- fr: vital

- mammography
- noun
- a technique using X-rays to diagnose and locate tumors of the breasts.
- Example: MAMMOGRAPHY is extremely effective at showing lumps and areas of calcification within the breast, therefore in most circumstances it is possible to predict the nature of a lesion solely by its appearance on the mammogram.
- fr: mammographie

- pelvis
- noun
- the large bony structure near the base of the spine to which the hind limbs or legs are attached in humans and many other vertebrates.
- Example: Ultrasound abdomen + PELVIS - liver appears prominent and brighter than normal suggestive of fatty infiltration.
- fr: bassin

- obstetric
- adjective
- relating to childbirth and the processes associated with it.
- Example: all routine obstetric ultrasounds are performed using state-of-the-art ultrasound machines.
- fr: obstétrique

- echogenicity
- noun
- the ability to bounce an echo, e.g. return the signal in ultrasound examinations.
- Example: Renal tract ultrasound - generalized increased ECHOGENICITY of the renal cortex consistent with chronic renal disease most likely of renovascular origin.
- fr: échogénicité

- velocity
- noun
- The speed at which a sound wave travels through a medium is called the propagation speed or velocity.
- Example: The velocity an ultrasound wave within a material can then simply be found by measuring the time delay between two echoes and dividing by the distance traversed.
- fr: rapidité

- musculoskeletal
- adjective
- Having to do with muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments, joints, and cartilage.
- Example: Further differentials for the presenting combination of neuritic chest pain and shortness of breath to be considered: MUSCULOSKELETAL - e.g., rib fracture, reasonable suggestion, elderly may have osteoporosis.
- fr: musculo-squelettique

- echocardiogram
- noun
- a test of the action of the heart using ultrasound waves to produce a visual display, used for the diagnosis or monitoring of heart disease.
- Example: Observation Throughout his stay he had daily weights, lying and standing BP readings (as his BP was consistently low and needed to be monitored, especially with the vigorous diuretic use for his heart failure, which could reduce his blood pressure further), repeat ECHOCARDIOGRAM carried out to monitor the progression of the pericardial effusion and heart failure.
- fr: échocardiogramme

- endoscopy
- noun
- a procedure in which an instrument is introduced into the body to give a view of its internal parts.
- Example: The patient was attending Dr outpatients clinic 10 days after the ENDOSCOPY to find out the results from the ENDOSCOPY.
- fr: endoscopie

- abdominal ultrasound
- noun
- is a type of imaging test. It is used to look at organs in the abdomen, including the liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, and kidneys.
